With utility-scale photovoltaic systems becoming more prominent in the energy industry, an analysis of these large systems on the ecosystem around it is crucial to ensure no harm is coming to the plants, water sources, or animals located around the photovoltaic panels. The study of solar ecology allows for an understanding of how these PV panels interact with other systems and the potential pros and cons from installations. Photovoltaic panel installations specifically impact the nutrient and hydrologic cycle of the area around it. Research is currently being focused on the hydrologic cycle and how panel runoff can impact the soil chemistry and potentially impact local water sources.
